An efficient literature search is fundamental to the practice of evidence based dentistry. The explosion of dental literature these days is unparalleled in the history of dentistry. It is impossible for a clinician to read everything that is published to keep him self updated, or to be an expert in all aspects of dentistry. However the clinician is compelled to refer certain published reports in order to recommend viable treatment modalities for his/her patients without just relying on his/her own individual experience. A number of excellent and highly specialized electronic databases are available for the direct access to medical and dental literature. The purpose of the review is to focus upon the various available search engines and to understand the process of literature searching.
